Hoos Rise Together
In response to COVID-19 and because 73% of first-generation college students do not graduate in four years, Rise Together is partnering with Hoos First Look to pilot a 12-week virtual mentoring program designed to provide first-generation, low-income students with weekly virtual mentorship, college readiness support, and college, scholarship and financial aid guidance.
Our Hoos Rise Together Mentors in Action
Hoos Rise Together Program
Our mission is to create a pipeline of diverse and talented UVA students. Rise Together is launching a new virtual initiative alongside Hoos First Look, called Hoos Rise Together. This collaboration will provide 10 first-generation low-income students with comprehensive weekly virtual mentorship, college readiness support, and college, scholarship and financial aid guidance. We will also provide 34 UVA student mentors with weekly intensive training, professional development and support needed to effectively guide students towards their postsecondary aspirations.
Our goal is to offset this period of social isolation by creating a sustainable and scalable pathway for rising high school seniors to connect with diverse current UVA students, maintain a positive mindset, thrive academically and ultimately attend the postsecondary school of their choice. We aim to further our model by incorporating UVA alumni as mentors for current and incoming first-generation, low-income students to help them navigate the tricky processes of selecting a major, finding a job/internship, and networking.
