Due to COVID-19, we collected high school outcomes mid-year in March, or only halfway through our program. Relative to similar AVID students at their school who did not participate in Rise Together, our students:

Service Day Testimonials

High school students had the opportuntity to reflect on a Service Day project that they planned and Rise Together coordinated. HS students mentored  students at 4 Charlottesville City elementary schools and attended a college panel and free lunch at UVA.

This project taught me how to manage my patience. I normally have really bad patience and trouble staying cool when annoyed. But working with the first graders helped manage that.

While at UVA I realized that their community tries to and enjoys being part of our community even though there aren’t many students that look like [me/us].

Working together as a class to create a service day program was a new experience for most of us. I’ve never done anything like this in any other program and it was a really special thing for me. Next time I do a similar project I will be sure to be more talkative and more confident. Especially with younger kids when they need a role model.

The panel taught me a couple things, mostly that regardless of your story you can get into colleges and make the things you want completed, completed.

Overall, I’m very happy that I signed up for this program. Over the course of the semester, I found myself being challenged (in a positive way), and am learning more about myself, and helping others. I hope that my experiences and input have positively impacted the students as much as they have impacted me. I know that I’m a bit reserved and introverted and it takes some time for me to come out of my shell, and I think that this program has helped with that.

I enjoyed the partnership with Rise Together this year. I think the students, for the most part, responded well to the facilitators and found the time with them to be beneficial. In planning ahead for next year (specifically with the rising seniors), I know that they will need a lot more assistance with college applications and essays because of the way this school year ended. Having college workshop days will definitely be needed. Other lessons/activities that align with AVID objectives or topics that we address (time management, communication (with teachers), stress management, self-advocacy, etc.) will also be helpful.
